Baccarat has a reputation for being a high-roller's game, but it's actually the simplest card game on the floor. You don't play a hand — you bet on which of two hands, Player or Banker, will finish closer to nine. The cards deal themselves according to fixed rules, and you just pick a side and watch. Here's exactly what you're betting on and what each bet pays.

The rules

Place a bet on one of three outcomes — Player, Banker, or Tie — and set your stake.
Two cards are dealt to each side, face-down, then squeezed open.
Card values: Ace = 1, 2-9 = face value, 10s and face cards = 0. Only the last digit of the total counts, so a 7 and an 8 (15) is a 5.
A first-two-card total of 8 or 9 is a "natural" — no more cards are drawn, and the higher natural wins.
If neither side has a natural, the third-card rules decide whether Player and then Banker draw one more card. These rules are fixed — nobody chooses.
Whichever side lands closer to 9 wins. Equal totals mean a Tie.

The three main bets

Player pays 1:1 — bet 10, win 10. Banker also pays about even money, but wins are charged a 5% commission (a Banker win pays 0.95:1), because the Banker side wins slightly more often than the Player side thanks to the draw rules. That commission is the whole reason Banker isn't a free lunch: it's the game quietly balancing the two sides. Tie pays 8:1 and is the flashy one, but ties are rare — it carries by far the largest house edge of the three.

If you want the plain answer to "which should I bet": Banker wins marginally more often even after commission, Player is a clean even-money bet, and Tie is the long shot. None of them require any decisions once the cards are down.

The third-card rules (so nothing feels random)

You never have to memorise these, but they explain why hands play out the way they do. If either side has 8 or 9, both stand. Otherwise the Player draws a third card on a total of 0-5 and stands on 6-7. The Banker then draws based on its own total and the value of the Player's third card — a tighter table that lets Banker react to what Player just drew. That reactive draw is exactly why Banker holds its small edge.

The side bets

Alongside the main bet you can back any of four side bets on the same deal:

Player Pair — the Player's first two cards are the same rank. Pays 11:1.
Banker Pair — the Banker's first two cards match. Pays 11:1.
Lucky 6 — Banker wins with a total of 6. Pays 12:1 if it's a two-card six, 20:1 on a three-card six.
Panda 8 — Player wins with a three-card total of 8. Pays 25:1.

Side bets are higher-variance by design — they hit rarely and pay big. Treat them as spice on top of the main bet, not a replacement for it.

Where the return comes from

Baccarat's edge isn't hidden in a payout you can't see — it's built into two visible mechanics: the fixed draw rules that let Banker win slightly more, and the 5% commission that claws that advantage back. Player, Banker and Tie each carry their own fixed, verifiable return, and the side-bet paytable above is the whole story. There's no dealer skill and no adjustable odds — the same rules run every hand.

Provably fair — verify the deal

Every card in the shoe is drawn from the round's committed seed, so you can prove the deal wasn't tampered with:

Before the hand, the server publishes a SHA-256 hash of its secret seed.
Every card is derived from serverSeed : clientSeed : nonce through a published algorithm.
After the hand, the seed is revealed. You hash it, confirm it matches the commitment, and recompute the exact card order — the same Player and Banker hands you were dealt.
